How a terrain piece is made

Buying something made to order means waiting without seeing the work happen. Here is what fills that time — and what the object actually is, since that matters more than the waiting.
What you are getting
A terrain piece has two parts. The outer one is a stainless steel bezel with a brushed finish — a standard cabochon setting, bought in, chosen because it is well made and consistent. The inner one is a relief insert, printed to order in durable polymer and set into the bezel so that the landscape stands slightly proud of the rim.
It is not silver, and nothing about it is cast. Saying otherwise would be easy and would also be false. The value here is not the material: it is that the terrain belongs to one person, and the object was made once, for that one set of coordinates.
1. The terrain becomes a model
The coordinates you chose are used to pull elevation data for that patch of ground. Those heights become a three-dimensional surface: every point on the grid is a real measured altitude, scaled up vertically so the landscape can be felt under a thumb.
What you see turning in the configurator is that surface. The file sent to production is the same geometry at higher resolution.
2. Smoothing, and why it is not cheating
The raw elevation tiles are quantised and noisy on flat ground. Stretched to full relief height, that noise would read as mountains that are not there. The grid is smoothed before printing — and the printer cannot hold detail finer than roughly a third of a millimetre anyway, while one grid step on a 25 mm piece is about a tenth of that.
So the smoothing removes only what the process could never reproduce. What survives is the structure of the place: where it rises, where it falls, which way the water ran.
3. Printing
The insert is printed in resin at high resolution, in graphite or black. Printing rather than moulding is what makes a run of one economically possible at all: there is no tooling to pay for, so your coordinates cost the same to make as anyone else’s.
The piece is then cured, cleaned and checked against your configuration before it goes anywhere near the bezel.
4. Engraving, if you asked for it
Text on the reverse is laser-cut, and that is done off-site as a separate operation. It is the reason an engraved piece takes about twenty working days instead of ten, and the reason it costs more: it is not a setting on a machine already running, it is a second trip.
5. Setting and dispatch
The insert is seated into the bezel, the steel is wiped down, the piece is checked once more against the order — coordinates, form, colour, engraving — and packed.
Why it takes days rather than minutes
Because every stage above happens once, for one object. There is no shelf to take it from. That is the cost of the thing being yours, and the honest reason a date is confirmed rather than promised on the product page.
