Ships That Never Come Closer

From the beach the ships never come any closer and never quite leave. The cargo ship has been on the horizon since breakfast, carrying something to somewhere nobody here will ever see. The sailboat is going nowhere in particular and is doing it beautifully. The sea comes in in stripes, each one a slightly different idea of turquoise, and the sand takes all of them without comment.
